In Christianity, the Passion (from the Latin verb patior, passus sum; "to suffer, bear, endure", from which also "patience, patient", etc.) is the short final period in the life of Jesus. The parts of the four canonical Gospels that describe these events are known as the "Passion narratives".
This Sunday is the Fifth Sunday in Lent. Also known as Passion Sunday, the Fifth Sunday in Lent marks the start of Passiontide--the final days of the Lenten season in advance of Palm Sunday and the start of Holy Week. As is the annual tradition at Good Shepherd Church, we’ll pray the Litany of the Passion together to start our Holy Eucharists this Sunday. Based on the Passion narratives, the Litany of the Passion can be used corporately, as we'll do as a gathered body this Sunday, and can also be used as a personal devotion, for which it is extremely powerful contemplative act during the final days of Lent. Please make certain to take home your Litany of the Passion tri-fold bulletin insert this Sunday so you'll be able to use the Litany in your personal prayer time during Passiontide. I look forward to seeing each of you at worship this Sunday as we mark the beginning of Passiontide in our Lenten journey. Fr. Randall+
